More people in transport, storage and communications in Q2

The number of people engaged in the transport, storage and communications sector reached 16,436 in the second quarter (Q2) of this year, information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicates. The figure represents an increase of 11.4% year over year.

Also increasing, but by only 2.9%, was the number of people engaged in security activities, which stood at 13,590 at the end of June.

In contrast, DSEC noted that the number of people working in public sewage and refuse disposal activities fell to 909, down 2.3% year over year, with the same trend in wholesale and retail trade (65,803), down 1.6%, and in the gaming sector, which fell 0.3% to 52,992.

DSEC’s survey on manpower needs and wages for Q2 also noted that in June, average earnings (excluding irregular remuneration) of full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade and the gaming sector were MOP14,860 and MOP28,660, respectively.

Concurrently, average earnings in the transport, storage and communications sector, security activities, and public sewage and refuse disposal activities stood at MOP21,760, MOP13,680 and MOP20,990, respectively.

In the same period, employee recruitment rates for the wholesale and retail trade and gaming sectors were 2.9% and 1.1%, respectively. In contrast, the rates for the transport, storage and communications, security activities, and public sewage and refuse disposal sectors were 4.4%, 6.3% and 3.9%, respectively.

DSEC remarked that the survey covers the mentioned activity sectors; however, it excludes the self-employed, junket promoters, and junket associates in the gaming sector.

The number of employees includes both resident and nonresident workers living in or outside Macau.
