New technology adopted to prevent manhole covers from falling

The Public Works Bureau (DSOP) has announced advancements in sewer infrastructure aimed at enhancing safety and maintenance in the city’s densely populated older districts.

As part of its new sewer projects, the bureau has implemented innovative anti-fall frames installed beneath manhole covers to prevent accidents.

In a written response to lawmaker Ngan Iek Hang, the bureau highlighted the challenges posed by the high density of manhole covers along Macau’s older streets.

It emphasized the importance of road water wells and inspection wells, which are required to be set up at appropriate distances to collect rainwater and support sewer maintenance. The limited street-facing surfaces of older buildings, combined with new constructions, have led to an increased density of connecting channels and wells.

To tackle these issues, the DSOP has adopted anti-sinking manhole cover technology in recent projects. This includes stainless steel frames filled with concrete and decorative materials, enhancing durability but complicating daily maintenance due to the increased weight.

The DSOP and the Municipal Affairs Bureau said they are exploring the feasibility of further adopting new manhole cover technologies to improve safety and efficiency in city’s infrastructure. VC
