Defense Secretary Ash Carter says U.S. forces have killed a senior Islamic State leader known as Haji Iman, marking a further erosion of top leadership in the militant group in Syria and Iraq.
Carter and Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the announcement today (Friday) at a news conference at the Pentagon.
Carter said the Islamic State leader was well-known within its ranks, and that his death will hinder the network’s operations in Iraq and Syria.
Carter said he knows that IS leaders are often replaced.
