Sands China Supports Local Business: A Partnership for Sustainability

For years, Sands China has been committed to fostering the growth of local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) while upholding the highest standards of service across its resorts. A shining example of this commitment is the longstanding partnership with Kwan On Environmental Engineering CO., LTD (“Kwan On”), a local SME that has flourished alongside Sands China, driven by innovation, professionalism, and a shared dedication to environmental sustainability.
Established in 1995, Kwan On specializes in professional environmental engineering services, including drainage maintenance and waste oil recycling. In 2006, it expanded operations with a facility in the Industrial Park of Ilha Verde, Macao, becoming a leader in Macao’s eco-solutions.
Mr. Lok Sai On, the company’s Managing Director, stated that Sands China is the first integrated tourism and leisure enterprise they have collaborated with. Over the years of partnership, the company has not only learned advanced management culture and expertise from a large international corporation but has also been driven to keep pace with the times, continuously improving and innovating its service quality.
A Partnership Built on Trust and Innovation
The collaboration between Sands China and Kwan On began in 2007 when the latter was contracted to maintain the drainage systems and grease traps at The Venetian Macao. What started as a routine service quickly evolved into a dynamic partnership. Kwan On’s proactive approach and willingness to innovate were evident from the outset. Faced with the challenge of servicing dozens of grease traps efficiently, the company introduced Macao’s first suction truck within a month of collaboration, significantly improving service efficiency.
Over the past decade, Kwan On has expanded its workforce from a modest five employees to over seventy, reflecting a robust commitment to local job creation. This growth has been accompanied by significant investments in advanced equipment and research and development. Kwan On now has eight suction trucks, making it Macao’s largest fleet. Such achievements are a testament to Sands China’s role in empowering SMEs, providing them with opportunities to scale their operations and enhance their capabilities.
The partnership has weathered numerous challenges, showcasing Kwan On’s reliability and Sands China’s unwavering commitment to supporting local businesses. For instance, during a major event at The Venetian, Kwan On swiftly resolved a critical drainage blockage that could have disrupted the event. Their quick response not only ensured the event proceeded smoothly but also reinforced the trust that Sands China places in Kwan On’s capabilities. Moreover, Kwan On went a step further by proposing system improvements that were later implemented across the property, further solidifying their role as a valuable partner.
The partnership was truly tested during Typhoon Hato in 2017, when severe flooding disrupted Macao’s water and power supply. In this challenging time, Kwan On worked tirelessly alongside Sands China to restore services at a residential building in Fai Chi Kei, demonstrating their shared commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Such collaboration during crises not only highlights the resilience of both companies but also showcases their dedication to the community.
Kwan On’s quick response and innovative solutions during these trying times have earned them respect within the industry, allowing them to build a reputation based on reliability and excellence. This reliability was further recognized when Kwan On received a Service Excellence Award at the Sands Supplier Excellence Awards in 2017, a significant acknowledgment of their hard work and dedication.
Driving Sustainability Forward
Sands China’s collaboration with Kwan On extends beyond routine maintenance. The SME developed a recycling project that converts kitchen waste oil into biofuel, aligning perfectly with Sands China’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals. This initiative not only improves recycling efficiency but also reduces carbon emissions, contributing to Macao’s broader environmental efforts.
Additionally, the company’s ability to customize replacement parts for pumping systems has also helped Sands China further minimize waste and adhere to sustainable practices.
Sands China’s Procurement and Supply Chain Management Senior Manager Gloria Chio and Janice Chio, hold Kwan On’s expertise and problem-solving capabilities in high regard. Gloria Chio noted that Kwan On’s proactive approach and technical proficiency have been instrumental in maintaining Sands China’s property operations.
Looking ahead, the partnership is poised to explore new avenues in sustainability. As global emphasis on ESG grows, Sands China remains open to adopting cutting-edge green technologies recommended by suppliers, reinforcing its pledge to minimize environmental impact.
By providing opportunities, fostering innovation, and upholding shared values, Sands China continues to empower local businesses, ensuring a greener, more prosperous future for Macao. The partnership with Kwan On serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, demonstrating that when businesses work together with a common vision, they can create lasting positive change.
