STATISTICS | Macau’s population increases by 4.7 pct

Macau’s total population reached 636,200 at the end of 2014, representing an increase of 4.7 percent year-on-year (an increase of 28,700). The female population accounted for 50.6 percent of the total, figures released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
A total of 7,360 live births were delivered last year, an increase of 789 year-on-year, which DSEC stressed as being the highest number since 1989. The gender ratio of the newborns stood at 109.7, corresponding to 109.7 male babies per 100 female babies. Mortality cases totaled 1,939, which accounts for 19 more newborn deaths in 2014 than the previous year. Neoplasms (679), diseases of the circulatory system (467) and diseases of the respiratory system (325) are the top three underlying causes of death.
DSEC said in a statement that the number of Chinese immigrants surged in 2014. By the end of last year, there were 5,889 Chinese immigrants, up significantly by 2,551 year-on-year. Individuals granted right of abode totaled 2,278, a decrease of 213. A total of 1,409 illegal Chinese immigrants were repatriated to the mainland.
