The Transport Bureau (DSAT) has said that the taxi sector generally agrees with the government’s proposals to amend taxi operation regulations.
In a press statement, DSAT said the authorities convened a meeting with representatives of around 30 taxi operating companies to hear their views on the proposed amendments.
According to the plan, the government aims to optimize the requirements for light vehicles used as taxis, as well as their inspection and operating periods.
In the sessions, chaired by the Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Raymond Tam, the secretary stressed that taxis are an essential component of the land transport system and that improving the taxi service to fully enhance its function is imperative.
To gradually achieve these goals, the government plans to amend Administrative Regulation No. 21/2019 – Requirements, Inspections and Usage Period of Light-duty Vehicles for Hire – by simplifying the approval procedures for replacing taxis and establishing standards for handling replaced vehicles.
The proposed amendments also address requirements for taxi engine capacity and luggage compartment size, vehicle use and registration rules, and the simplification of the procedures for replacing old taxis with new ones.
Although DSAT claims the sector agrees with the measures, the press statement does not quote any industry representative confirming this.
