CHINA Ten workers were killed after a retaining wall under construction suddenly collapsed in the eastern province of Shandong, authorities said yesterday. Six people were killed on the spot, and four others died in the hospital, according to a statement posted on the Lanling municipal government’s website. Three others were in stable condition.

CHINA A plane operated by Chinese domestic carrier Joyair veered off a runway upon landing in the southeastern city of Fuzhou yesterday, and five people suffered minor injuries, the airline said. Joyair said it was investigating the cause of the accident and apologized to the 45 passengers and seven crew members on board, according to a statement posted on its website.
Macedonia Fighting between police forces and members of an armed group has continued for a second day in the northern Macedonian town of Kumanovo. Local TV channels Alfa and 24 Vesti yesterday reported that another police officer has died due to severe injuries sustained in the fighting, increasing the death toll of officers to six. At least another 30 were injured in an exchange of fire between special police forces and an armed group that started in the town on Saturday.

SPAIN A military transport plane crashed near Seville airport in southwestern Spain on Saturday, killing four crew members and injuring two seriously, officials said. The crash of the Airbus A400M, that was undergoing flight trials at the airport, raised questions about the security of the new, propeller-driven transport aircraft.

YEMEN’s Shiite rebels and their allies in the country’s splintered armed forces said Sunday they would accept a five-day humanitarian cease-fire to allow aid to reach civilians after more than a month of daily Saudi-led airstrikes. The cease-fire, scheduled to begin Tuesday, would help ease the suffering of civilians in the Arab world’s poorest country who increasingly lack food, fuel and medicine since the bombing campaign began March 26.
