Hong Kong | Democrat takes case of prison mistreatment to court

Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has taken his case of alleged mistreatment by prison staff to the smalls claims tribunal, reports Hong Kong public broadcaster RTHK.

Wong is seeking HKD16,000 in compensation after he claims he was stripped naked and asked to squat while answering questions from prison guards.

Hong Kong’s Correctional Services Department previously rejected his complaint about the treatment, but Wong says he has now filed an appeal against the decision and demanded a new investigation.

RTHK reported that Wong said he wants to interrogate the responsible prison official in a courtroom. Having criticized a lack of transparency in Correctional Services Department’s judgment.

Wong is also urging the government to establish an independent body to monitor whether inmates are being treated reasonably.
