‘Judicial independence is important for both Portugal and Macau’

The Portuguese Attorney General met yesterday with MSAR Chief Executive (CE) Chui Sai On at the government headquarters, Joana Marques Vidal said “the fundamental value of judicial independence is important for both Portugal and Macau,” adding that she was pleased to see the high importance given [to the topic] by the SAR government and the Chief Executive.”
The declaration from Joana Marques Vidal came in response to the CE’s previous statement: “The government attaches great importance to judiciary independence, whose fundamental value was established over time and that is the cornerstone for the development of the territory.”
The Chief Executive also added, “since the establishment of the MSAR, a close connection with Portugal was maintained through establishing friendship connections in many fields, [including] the signing of several agreements on legal and judiciary cooperation.” He concluded by saying that the magistrates from Portugal currently serving in Macau have obtained recognition and great respect from the population.
Also attending the meeting was the Secretary for Administration and Justice, Sonia Chan, who expressed satisfaction with the fact that Portugal continues to send magistrates to Macau. “I believe that the two territories will strengthen exchanges and cooperation in judiciary matters,” she added. RM
