Macau hotels have been ranked the most expensive in the Asia-Pacific region, with the most expensive average hotel room rate reaching MOP1,609, according to the HRS Hotel Price Radar.
Between January and March, the average price of Macau hotels increased by 64 percent year-on-year, recording one of the sharpest increases among the Asia-Pacific destinations, according to data quoted by Travel Daily News.
The HRS Hotel Price Radar links the increases in hospitality-related prices in Macau to the industry’s focus on the MICE sector.
“Macau has been actively developing its MICE and business events industry in order to diversify and avoid an over-
reliance on revenues from gaming and mainland Chinese tourists,” it explained.
“The availability of high-end venues has also boosted its attractiveness as a business events destination, leading to the huge jump in average hotel room rates,” it added.
Sydney and Hong Kong emerged as the other two cities with the most expensive average hotel room rates. These rates are set around MOP1,467 per night. Sydney’s average hotel room rate recorded a 2.3 percent decrease, while Hong Kong recorded a 20 percent increase over the first quarter of last year.
The two cities are followed by Singapore, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai.
In India, Bangalore and New Delhi ranked 11th and 12th respectively, with average hotel room rates reaching around MOP514 and MOP478 respectively. MDT/Lusa
