Macau border crossings surpass 100 million

Macau recorded 100 million border crossings by 2 p.m. this Saturday, breaking last year’s record by 18 days earlier.

The recent data released by the Public Security Police (PSP) reflects a daily average of 633,000 entries and exits; a 10.8% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

The increase seen in passenger movement is credited to favorable cross-border policies introduced this year, including the “one entry per week” scheme, multiple-entry visa arrangements, and new measures allowing Macau-registered vehicles to circulate in Guangdong province.

The Border Gate checkpoint alone exceeded 50 million passenger movements by May 30, while the Hengqin border checkpoint and the Macau port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) each recorded over 10 million crossings by early May.

Further easing border crossings, starting today, eligible foreign travelers in private vehicles can complete immigration clearance at the Macau Port of the HZMB without leaving their vehicles, authorities announced in a separate statement.

Following a thorough assessment of cross-border travel demand and vehicle clearance capacity, the authorities confirmed that travelers who are nationals of visa-exempt countries for Macau and hold valid passports may undergo entry procedures directly from their cars.

Similarly, all foreign travelers with valid passports can complete exit procedures without exiting their vehicles via designated lanes. Those ineligible for in-vehicle clearance may instead complete immigration formalities at adjacent passenger inspection rooms or the entry-exit halls near the vehicle lanes.

The “Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles” via the HZMB is still set to launch – expected later this year. The scheme was originally expected to start in late 2024 or early this year.
