Researchers pioneer non-invasive solution to chronic back pain

A University of Macau (UM) research team has developed a glycan-based treatment for intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), a leading cause of chronic lower back pain. Led by Prof. Wang Chunming, the team created a polysaccharide glue from glucomannan octanoate (GMOC) that protects a key protein, MFG-E8, from enzymatic degradation in disc tissue. Successfully tested in animal models (rats and rabbits), the glue slowed degeneration and reduced pain. Published in Nature Communications, the innovation may reduce the need for invasive surgery. The research is patented and moving toward clinical application, UM stated.
