Total visitor spending down nearly 20pct year-on-year

The total spending (excluding gaming expenses) of visitors to Macau in the third quarter of 2015 is down by nearly 20 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Service.
While the value of total spending in the third quarter (MOP12.47 billion) marked a slight increase of 1.8 percent over the previous quarter, it remains 19.5pct below the year-on-year figures.
Furthermore, the third quarter of 2015 saw a decrease in the spending of visitors per capita by 18pct year-on-year, dropping to MOP 1,540. Per capita spending from mainland China made up the bulk of this decline, itself slipping by 20pct year-on-
year.
Per capita spending of visitors from Singapore (MOP1,632), Japan (MOP1,620), Malaysia (MOP1,611), Hong Kong (MOP913) and Taiwan (MOP1,402) all registered year-on-year decreases. Meanwhile, the per capita spending of long-
haul tourists varied, with those from the U.S. (MOP1,353) rising by 16.7 percent year-on-year and those from Australia (MOP1,312) falling 12.4pct.
Analyzed by length of stay, same-day visitors saw an increase in total spend of 2 percent year-on-
year (MOP 2.66 billion), while that of overnight visitors was down 23.8 percent year-on-year, sitting at MOP 9.81 billion.
Analyzed by consumption, tourists primarily spent their money on Shopping (43.6pct), Accommodation (25.7pct) and Food & Beverage (21.9pct).  Visitors from the mainland spent an average of MOP907 on shopping, down by 28pct year-on-
year, while long-haul visitors spent primarily on Accommodation and Food and Beverage.
