Typhoon warning lowered as Wutip nears

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) downgraded its tropical cyclone warning from Signal No. 3 to No. 1 at 6 p.m. yesterday as Tropical Cyclone Wutip approached. By 8 p.m., the storm was about 680 kilometers from Macau, forecast to hit Hainan Island early Friday before moving northeast toward Guangdong’s western coast. Winds in Macau, which had weakened, may strengthen again due to Wutip’s southwesterly airstream. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected through Sunday, raising flood risks. Signal No. 8 and storm surge warnings remain unlikely for now.
