The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) has announced that it will increase the number of public fast-charging devices across Macau by approximately 20% this year to meet strong demand for electric vehicle charging, while also expanding electric motorcycle charging points to about 1,400.
“With the number of electric motorcycles growing rapidly, we will respond by adding charging points at more than 50 public car parks across Macau – all of which will feature dual-system compatibility,” Environmental Protection Bureau director Ip Kuong Lam reportedly said. “We expect to increase the number of charging points by approximately 45% this year, from 985 to around 1,400.”
The director also commended public response to a long-term subsidy program introduced last year, noting that “residents have been very enthusiastic.”
According to the bureau, Macau’s first ultra-fast charging station – located on Rua da Patinagem in the Cotai area – has completed civil works and equipment installation. Following successful testing, it will be opened to the public.
Speaking on the sidelines of an environmental protection event on Saturday, Ip said the government will, in line with its policy agenda, increase the share of clean electricity from purchased power to 50% this year while continuing to expand solar photovoltaic deployment.
He also said carbon-reduction guidelines for the food and beverage and office sectors will be developed to provide reference for industry and the public in reducing emissions.
While current studies suggest Macau’s local carbon emissions have “basically” been brought under control, Ip said further measures will still be pursued.
