A local delegation, including members from the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT), the Municipal Affairs Bureau, the Consumer Council, and representatives from the Macao Vegetable Wholesalers Association, recently toured several areas of Yongzhou city in Hunan province, China, to explore new sources of fresh produce suppliers for Macau.
In a recent statement, the DSEDT said the visit occurred late last month, during which the delegation met with government departments and industry representatives and visited several vegetable planting sites that supply Hong Kong and Macau.
The delegation also conducted on-site inspections of the vegetable planting and production processes, as well as transportation and logistics systems.
According to DSEDT, Yongzhou city currently has 116 registered vegetable bases supplying Hong Kong and Macau, with products reaching Macau in just seven to eight hours after being harvested and processed.
The group said it had held discussions to introduce varieties such as bok choy and taro to supply local markets, with the first batch of these products expected to arrive in Macau in the first quarter of next year.
In the same statement, the group said its primary goal is to survey and expand supply sources so that both availability and prices of fresh horticultural products remain stable. RM
