LRT passenger numbers recover to 24,000 per day in July

The Light Rapid Transit (LRT) reportedly transported an average of 24,000 passengers per day in July.

The figure represents an increase of 18.23% year over year and 2.53% month over month. This came after June recorded a significant month-on-month drop of almost 20%.

Taking into account the results of the first seven months of this year, the monthly average number of passengers transported per day has increased to 27,486, the highest level recorded since the mass transit system opened to the public.

According to frequent users, a higher passenger influx was observed in July, particularly on weekends, coinciding with events in the Cotai area.

As noted in previous reports, it is not possible to establish a concrete correlation between passenger increases and events, as the LRT company does not make available data on station usage and times of day.

Another factor that might be contributing to the increase in LRT passenger numbers is the growing use of the Hengqin border checkpoint by visitors crossing between Macau and the mainland.

According to mainland immigration authorities, the Hengqin border checkpoint recorded a record-breaking 2.8 million crossings, representing a 26% year-on-year increase. The same authorities said almost two-thirds of these passengers were mainland visitors to Macau.

The LRT is particularly convenient for crossing the Hengqin border, linking the border checkpoint directly to the Cotai area.
