Macau Daily Times at 18: Embracing maturity amid challenges

I just returned from Seoul, a city where technology and daily life blend effortlessly. Unlike Macau, where Uber does not operate and transportation remains fragmented and problematic, Seoul’s Uber connects seamlessly with all taxi networks, making getting around smooth and efficient. But beyond infrastructure, what struck me most was the human connection. In Korea, people greet one another even in elevators – a simple gesture that reminds us of our shared humanity.

Over a few days, I witnessed a city alive with vibrant and free expression: noisy demonstrations supporting Palestine, silent protests tied to political struggles, and billboards promoting candidates running in today’s elections.

At 18, Macau Daily Times reaches adulthood. This milestone brings respect for what we’ve achieved and responsibility for what lies ahead.

We still face economic recovery and political uncertainty – as a reader and Macau resident quite frankly expresses in this edition (see page 2). But like Korea, we can foster resilience and respect in our society. The challenges are real, but with maturity comes the power to change – to improve how we connect, move, and live together as a community.

At 18, we have to thank you – our readers, advertisers, and friends – for being there and supporting us.
