Macau, Hong Kong officials stress smooth progress before opening

The 15th National Games Road Cycling (Men’s Individual Race)

Officials from Macau and Hong Kong said yesterday that both regions are committed to ensuring the success of China’s 15th National Games, and events in the two areas are running smoothly.

The men’s individual cycling road race took place on Saturday, marking the first cross-boundary race in the National Games’ history and the only event that connects the three host regions – Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau – in a single competition.

“Cross-boundary transport and port services were well coordinated, reflecting close cooperation among the three regions’ governments,” said Eric Chan Kwok-ki, chief secretary for administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government.

According to him, Hong Kong has recruited more than 16,000 volunteers for the Games, forming the largest volunteer team in the city’s history, including over 1,000 youth volunteers aged 15 to 17.

“The city’s promotional campaign for the Games reaches audiences in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore through online and outdoor advertising to attract visitors,” Chan noted.

“We are deeply honored to take part in hosting this national event,” he said. “We will continue working hand in hand with Guangdong and Macay to deliver a simple, safe and splendid event for the whole nation.”

The events are also well underway in Macau.

O Lam, Macau’s Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture said that 27 sports delegations and more than 1,800 participants are expected to arrive in Macau during the Games.

“Since Monday, athletes and officials have been arriving in Macau,” she said. “We have designated four special ports with ‘green channels’ to facilitate smooth customs clearance for participants and technical staff.”

“Macau is committed to ensuring the success of every competition and to presenting a satisfying result to both the country and the local community,” O said.

The Games’ opening ceremony was held yesterday evening in Guangzhou. lv/Xinhua
