The Health Bureau (SSM) has announced plans to trial no-smoking areas outside four educational institutions this November.
Alvis Lo, director of the bureau, revealed the initiative at a recent event, underscoring the government’s intent to curb tobacco exposure near schools and nurseries.
Lo said the pilot program will establish no-smoking zones within 10 meters of entrances and exits at Luso-Chinesa School in Taipa, Kung Leun Vocational and Technical Middle School, Escola Catolica Estrela do Mar (Primary School), and Creche Diocesana Helen Liang – Centro Familiar.
“The relevant pilot will refer to the bus stop model and set up no-smoking areas within 10 meters of school and nursery entrances and exits,” Lo explained.
Alongside tobacco initiatives, Lo addressed current respiratory health concerns, focusing on influenza and chikungunya. He reported a positive influenza test rate of 20% among patients with fever and respiratory symptoms in the past week, down from 25% previously.
Regarding vaccines, Lo stated, “The vaccination situation among Macau residents is currently favorable. More than 100,000 residents have been vaccinated, which is about 12% higher than the same period last year. We hope to continue accelerating vaccination to ensure residents have better protection.”
