Man arrested for suspected arson in residential building

A 35-year-old local man was arrested by police for allegedly setting fire to the stairwell of his residential building. Authorities believe the suspect had been drinking at the time. The fire, which occurred Monday evening in a historic Tong Lau building, burned miscellaneous items but could have caused serious damage due to limited fire safety measures. Police said the suspect, who reported that he was a chef, deliberately used a lighter to ignite discarded furniture and other materials. The case has been referred to the Public Prosecutions Office.
