Orix sees Osaka IR as part of broader real-asset strategy

Orix Corp is positioning its involvement in the MGM Osaka integrated resort as part of a broader strategy to expand its portfolio of physical assets while leveraging expertise developed across its existing businesses.
The Japanese financial services group, which is MGM Resorts International’s main domestic partner in the project, said its infrastructure division looks for investment opportunities in areas where it can apply established capabilities rather than entering unfamiliar markets without a clear connection to its existing operations.
The approach covers sectors including real estate, public infrastructure, environment and energy, and aircraft and ships. Orix also oversees its participation in the Osaka integrated resort, which is being developed on Yumeshima and is expected to become Japan’s first casino resort.
Shuji Irie, chief operating officer of Orix’s infrastructure business unit, said the group’s businesses share a focus on identifying investment opportunities, improving asset value and strengthening profitability through operations.
He cited the Osaka project as an example of this strategy, saying Orix is combining experience in real-asset investment and business operations with the expertise of its partners to create long-term value.
MGM Resorts holds a 43.5% stake in the Osaka consortium, with Orix and other Japanese companies holding the remaining interests.
The JPY1.51 trillion (USD9.67 billion) project is scheduled to open in late 2030. MGM Resorts said in July that construction remained on schedule and within budget, with the company having invested about $600 million at the time.
MGM Resorts expects to invest about $1 billion annually in 2027 and 2028 as it completes its capital commitment to the project.
