Typhoon Signal No. 1 was hoisted at 11 p.m. last night as a tropical depression developed over the south-central South China Sea, according to the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG). The storm was expected to enter Macau’s 800-kilometer radius by early this morning.
According to the bureau’s forecast, as of yesterday at 5:30 p.m., the weather system was expected to gradually intensify over the next several days. Its projected path at the time indicated a general movement toward Hainan Island and the Beibu Gulf, though officials continue to monitor any shifts in its trajectory.
While the tropical depression is not expected to make a direct hit on Macau, its outer bands will bring noticeable weather changes to the region later this week.
The SMG forecasts strengthening winds and increasingly frequent showers, with periods of heavy rain possible depending on the system’s development and proximity, adding that there is a “medium” possibility of Typhoon Signal No. 3 being issued on Friday.
