Tourism office orders inspection of collapsed steel frame in Sai Van

The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has requested the submission of an accident report after a large steel frame structure collapsed near the Macau Tower at the intersection of Praça do Lago Sai Van and Avenida do Lago Sai Van Monday morning, triggered by a strong gust of wind, according to local authorities.

The metal frame toppled onto a car and at least seven motorcycles parked nearby, with no injuries reported.

The incident took place at Sai Van Lake Square, where the “25th Macao Food Festival” is set to run from this Friday through November 30. The annual food festival is organized by the United Association of Food and Beverage Merchants of Macau.

A statement from the Fire Services Bureau (CB) confirmed an emergency call shortly after 11 a.m., reporting the collapsed steel frame measuring 30 by 7 meters. Shortly after, the incident was communicated to the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM).

As cited by local media, the organizer pledged “to conduct a comprehensive inspection of the structural safety of all structures on site, optimize wind resistance and stability designs, properly handle relevant insurance claims, and submit an accident report and follow-up reports as required.”

Yesterday, a local engineer surnamed Chen highlighted safety lapses in the structure’s construction to the local broadcaster. He stated that the main issue was “insufficient enclosure of the work area” and that the construction company “underestimated the threat of the typhoon and failed to add counterweights or traction measures”, such as concrete bases or water-filled barriers at the base of the structure.
