Citizens call for increased frequency of bus routes to HZMB Port

Citizens are calling for an increase in the frequency of the bus routes linking the city to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) Port.

According to opinions collected via a call-in to the public broadcaster radio program “Macau Talk,” the current public bus routes serving this location have a low frequency, which causes long waits for locals and visitors.

Additionally, due to the long waits during peak hours at the HZMB, the accumulation of passengers waiting for the buses is too high, leading to conflicts when entering the buses, particularly on trips from the HZMB Port into the city.

Currently, the port is served by three bus routes (101X, 102X, and 103X), with an average frequency of about 10 minutes during peak hours on weekdays and about eight minutes on weekends and public holidays.

During off-peak hours, this frequency can drop to as low as 30 minutes.

Opinions indicate that the bus frequency is sufficient during weekdays but needs to be increased on weekends and public holidays, when there is an additional influx of visitors.

The same radio program also heard the opinion of a member of the Transport Consultative Committee on the matter.

Ip Wai Keong noted that the committee has addressed the topic, stating that he believes that as more residents move into Zone A of the new landfills, more bus routes will be added to serve these residents and, consequently, better serve the HZMB Port.

He noted that authorities are expected to start reviewing the bus routes in the second half of this year.

This review is also part of the work related to the upcoming public bus concession. In the meantime, and while there are no additional routes passing through this location, he claims that the existing issues can be eased by slightly increasing the frequency of the three existing routes.
