Coastal water quality improves, officials say

The Northern District Community Consultative Council met with the Environmental Protection Bureau to discuss sewage treatment and coastal water improvements. Officials said recent pollution was mainly caused by misconnected sewers and combined sewer overflow. Targeted measures reduced contaminants by over 80% in Areia Preta, 50–80% near the Outer Harbour, and around 60% near the Inner Harbour. Overall 2025 coastal water quality is rated good, with very low heavy metal levels and ongoing monitoring to address odor issues.
