Consumer prices inch up on food and housing costs

Macau’s Composite Consumer Price Index (CPI) for May rose by 0.19% year-on-year but fell by 0.05% compared to April, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) reported.
Over the 12 months ending May, the average Composite CPI increased by 0.38% from the previous period (June 2023–May 2024).
Key price changes included a 0.21% year-on-year rise in the Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages category, driven by higher eating-out and takeaway costs. The Housing & Fuels index also edged up 0.13% due to increased rental charges.
Recreation, Sport & Culture prices surged 4.14% year-on-year, while Information & Communication (-3.09%) and Clothing & Footwear (-2.47%) saw declines.
Month-on-month, food prices dropped 0.03%, reflecting lower costs for fruits, fresh fish, seafood, and vegetables. Transport (-0.56%) and Recreation, Sport & Culture (-0.42%) prices decreased after Easter due to cheaper airfares and hotel rates. Conversely, Clothing & Footwear (+0.71%) and Household Furnishings (+0.28%) increased.
The Composite CPI aggregates all groups, with major household spending in Housing & Fuels (34.47%), Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (29.47%), and Transport (8.33%). LV
