Exhibition explores firecracker industry through archives and design

“Legacy of Time: An Exhibition of Historical Documents on Macau’s Firecracker Industry” is being held at the Arts and Culture Gallery of the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) Library from April 15 to Aug. 31.

The exhibition is jointly organized by Macau University of Science and Technology, its Faculty of Humanities and Arts, and Sands China Ltd.

Marking MUST’s 26th anniversary, the exhibition continues a series on Macau’s firecracker industry, once a key driver of the city’s economy from the late 19th century to the 1980s. It showcases about 100 archival documents and 500 fireworks packaging labels.

Divided into “Fireworks in the Archives” and “Splendor in Miniature,” the display highlights business records, shipping documents, and vividly designed labels from across the Greater Bay Area. Together, they trace production, trade, and visual culture, revealing how craftsmanship and commercial design shaped Macau’s industrial heritage and festive traditions over time.
