Hengqin Port celebrates six years with over 110 million passenger crossings

Having started operations on August 18, 2020, Hengqin Port marked its sixth anniversary yesterday, with the Public Security Police Force (PSP) noting that over the past six years, the port has processed a cumulative total of over 110 million passenger crossings.

According to the PSP, this year alone (January 1 to August 15), the average daily passenger volume reached 98,000, a 2.6-fold increase from the average of 26,000 per day before the opening of the new joint inspection building in 2019.

The average daily vehicle throughput reached 12,000, including 8,000 vehicles with single license plates, representing increases of nearly 1.7 times and 15 times, respectively, compared to 2019, when the daily average was 4,500 vehicles, including 500 with single license plates.

The recent increase in the use of the port by locals and visitors has also led to several border-crossing records this year.

PSP noted that in 2026, the port has already recorded a record-high single-day passenger volume of 148,000, recorded on May 2, and a record-high single-day vehicle volume of 14,000, recorded on April 30.

Among those crossing through this border, Macau residents accounted for 28.9%, while tourists, non-local university students, and non-local employees accounted for 40%, 14.7%, and 15.7%, respectively.

Over the past six years, the Port has continually upgraded its capacity and facilities, with authorities advancing its intelligent upgrades.

The Port was China’s first “joint one-stop” lane, which has since evolved into full “smart clearance” coverage.

Effective from yesterday (August 18), Macau residents and Hong Kong permanent residents passing through the Hengqin Port passenger inspection hall, the Passenger Clearance Hall for Vehicle Passengers, as well as the “Joint One-Stop” self-service lanes, can use their Hong Kong and Macau Residents’ Travel Permits for Travel to and from the Mainland (including those held by non-Chinese nationals) for both outbound (Macau to the Mainland) and inbound (Mainland to Macau) clearance procedures.
