Hong Kong couple caught smuggling MOP3 million worth of meth

The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a Hong Kong man and woman at the airport Sunday, seizing one kilogram of suspected methamphetamine, also known as “ice,” with an estimated street value of MOP3 million.

PJ spokesman Ho Wai Lok briefed reporters at 5:45 p.m. in the arrival hall of the airport shortly after the drugs were uncovered by officers.

Ho confirmed to the media that 500 grams of methamphetamine were seized from each suspect, totaling one kilogram.

Authorities revealed that the two suspects, identified as Wong, a 51-year-old chef, and Chan, a 63-year-old unemployed woman, were separately hired by a cross-border drug trafficking group to smuggle narcotics through Macau.

Wong and Chan each arrived separately in Macau at approximately 10:15 a.m. Sunday via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB).

They then proceeded to independently make their way to Macau International Airport, where police intercepted them just before noon, authorities explained.

According to media reports, the duo admitted to being hired for the smuggling operation and expected a combined reward of HKD 55,000 if successful in transporting the drugs to their final destination, though they refused to disclose the source of the drugs.

The PJ is continuing investigations into the origin of the drugs, and the duo will be transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office to face drug trafficking charges.
