The Macao University of Tourism (UTM) celebrated its 30th anniversary yesterday with a naming ceremony for its newly renovated educational facility, now called the Yiu Tung Building.
Formerly known as the Silver Jubilee Building, the 14-story building has a total area of approximately 16,000 square meters.
It includes 58 lecture rooms, 54 faculty offices, four teaching kitchens, and simulation classrooms for hospitality training.
The ceremony also honored businessman and philanthropist Francis Lui Yiu Tung, chairman of K. Wah Group and Galaxy Entertainment Group, and who also serves as the inaugural chair of the Trustees Committee of the UTM Development Foundation.
As the university’s first honorary sponsor, Lui has donated MOP30 million to the UTM Development Foundation.
This donation marks UTM’s first new source of financial revenue, providing greater flexibility to enhance academic programs, research, and teaching quality.
“As a public institution of higher education, this marks the university’s first time establishing a new financial revenue stream, providing greater flexibility for long-term development,” said UTM rector Fanny Vong.
“From obtaining usage rights to the building during our 25th anniversary, to receiving this generous donation for our 30th, each milestone has been made possible by the steadfast support of the SAR Government,” she added.
Starting this academic year, the building will serve as the main venue for degree programs and can accommodate more than 2,000 students. Times Reporter
