The Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system recorded a significant drop in passenger numbers last month. According to the company’s monthly report, the LRT transported an average of 19,800 passengers per day in June, a figure that represents a drop of almost 20% compared to the previous month (May).
June’s results mark the lowest figure of this year, closer to the numbers seen in 2024 (before the opening of the Seac Pai Van and Hengqin Lines).
Still, when compared year-on-year, the June 2025 figure was some 71% higher than June 2024, when the LRT recorded only 11,600 passengers per day, the lowest figure of that year.
On aggregate, the LRT transported an average of 24,550 passengers per day in the first half (1H) of this year, compared to 13,050 during the same period last year. It is worth noting that at this point last year, only the Taipa Line was in operation.
Effects of New Lines Below Expectations
Although officials have never committed to specifying a concrete figure for the increase in passengers after the opening of the Seac Pai Van and Hengqin Lines, they have often hinted –on several occasions and by different officials – that with the opening of these two new lines, particularly the Hengqin one, LRT traffic should at least double.
In reality, the results show that although there is an obvious year-over-year increase, this increase in 1H 2025 is about 88.1%, below the expected doubling of the figure.
So far, this expectation was only met during three months (March, April, and May), when a +108.6% increase occurred.
