Q&A | Laurent Hoffman, Motorcycle GP rider

‘Racing in Macau is like being a kid in a candy store’

Ahead of the 57th edition of the Motorcycle Grand Prix (GP), the Times spoke with Belgium’s racer Laurent Hoffman in an exclusive interview, ahead of his third appearance at the local GP.

Macau Daily Times (MDT) – How do you see the Macau Motorcycle GP? How does it differ from your regular-season races?

Laurent Hoffman (LH) The Macau motorcycle GP is a truly unique race worldwide. I’m used to riding on roads between hedges and houses, but racing between the black and yellow Armco barriers is genuinely one of a kind.
Being among the only 20 riders worldwide who can race at top speed through the streets of Macau feels like being a kid in a candy store.

MDT – What’s special about Macau?

LH Macau is similar to Monaco in Europe, but larger. The big hotels, casinos, and the blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures are all amazing sights. I always enjoy returning here, and I feel very welcomed.

MDT – What do you expect from your participation this year?

LH Every year, the riders’ skill level is very high, making it hard to predict the outcome. I’m guessing it will be a close race among the top 5 and the top 12, and I’d be excited to be somewhere in the middle.
