Statistics | Chinese immigrant numbers soar even as non-resident growth slows

Across the year of 2015, 8,468 Chinese nationals immigrated to Macau, according to information released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC). This represents a significant growth of 43.8 percent, or an additional 2,579 immigrants when compared with 2014.
Those granted the right of abode totaled 1,784, down by 494 compared to the previous year, while a total of 1,778 illegal Chinese immigrants were repatriated to the mainland, marking an increase of 369 year-on-year.
Non-resident workers totaled 181,646 at end-2015, an increase of 11,300 compared with end-2014, indicating a slower growth of 6.6 percent this year, even as Chinese immigration soared.
In 2015 the number of live births delivered amounted to 7,055, a decrease of 305 year-on-
year. The gender ratio of the newborns stood at 109.2, meaning that 109.2 male babies were born for every 100 female babies.
Marriage registration was also down by 366 cases last year to 3,719 marriages in total, while divorces fell by 140 to 1,168 cases.
Mortalities totaled 2,002 in 2015, representing an increase of 63 year-
on-year. The top three underlying causes of death were neoplasms, diseases of the circulatory system and diseases of the respiratory system, which recorded 734, 504 and 321 deaths respectively.
The total population of Macau at end-2015 had reached 646,800, up 1.7 percent year-on-year, with the female population accounting for around 51 percent of the total, according to DSEC.
The proportion of the total population aged 65 and over increased by 0.6 percentage points to 9 percent, while those aged 14 or under saw a similar rise of 0.5 percentage points to make up 11.9 percent of the population. DB
