Statistics | Survey confirms gaming industry trends

Due to the decline in gross gaming revenue since June 2014, the total receipts of the sector have dropped by 2.5 percent year-on-year to MOP 354.06 billion in 2014, according to the Gaming Sector Survey 2014 from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
Receipts from gaming & related services (e.g. food & beverage, currency exchange, etc.) amounted to MOP 353.64 billion, down by 2.5 percent year-on-year, of which gaming receipts fell by 2.6 percent while food & beverage rose by 8.8 percent to MOP 613 million.
Total expenditure amounted to MOP150.9 billion, down by 3.7 percent year-on-year.  The purchasing of goods, commission paid and customer rebate accounted for 68.8 percent of the total, at MOP103.84 billion, down by 10.3 percent year-on-year. Operating expenses increased by 16 percent to MOP 24.56 billion, of which expenses for complimentary hotel accommodation (MOP 6.09 billion) and marketing & market research (MOP5.41 billion) rose by 21.7 percent and 31 percent respectively. Compensation of employees increased by 17.3 percent to MOP18.97 billion, while depreciation and interest paid slipped by 0.8 percent to MOP3.54 billion.
The gross value added, which measures how much the sector has contributed to the economy, amounted to MOP225.25 billion, down slightly by 0.3 percent year-
on-year. The gross surplus of the gaming sector (the total of receipts from gaming and related services, plus changes in inventories less expenditure) decreased by 1.6 percent while the gross surplus ratio rose marginally to 58.3 percent. The gross fixed capital formation increased by 22.8 percent year-on-year to MOP2.64 billion. According to DSEC, this possibly results of the major renovations and acquisitions of additional gaming equipment by gaming operators.
The number of gaming enterprises remained at 10 in 2014. The total number of full-time employees rose by 3.5 percent year-
on-year to 57,757, a slowdown from the 3.7 percent year-on-year growth recorded in 2013.
