Lifts in New Central Library to transport pedestrians between Tap Seac, Yuet Wah

Elevators will be installed at the new Central Library to transport pedestrians from the Tap Seac level to the Guia Hill mid-levels, President Hon Wai of the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) noted in a reply to lawmaker Ron Lam.

Lam asked the government about improvements to sidewalks and pedestrian facilities in his written inquiry delivered in September.

Citing the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC), Hon said that “elevators will be installed in the new Central Library as one of its vertical traffic facilities,” and that the elevators will connect Estrada de Vitória and Rua Filipe O’Costa through the library.

He described the elevators as providing “a friendly and accessible passage for the public,” adding that the facility will be completed alongside the library.

However, he did not mention whether the facility will be located in an area of the library that will be subject to the library’s hours of operation.

Hon cited the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), which had said that all sidewalks on the Macau Peninsula have been equipped with accessibility measures, and these will gradually roll out in Taipa, Cotai and Coloane. Elevators will also be installed on footbridges in several locations.

Lam also asked about the uncovered connections from exits to balcony areas at the Taipa Main Footbridge. Citing the Public Works Bureau (DSOP), Hon said in response that it has the best design after considering a series of factors. He also pledged that future footbridges will be built with direct connections to covered sidewalks. AL
