UM brings in extra security measures against illegal immigrants

1 Renato Marques MG_1430The University of Macau (UM) has revealed that it has installed extra lighting and six more guardhouses to counter the surge in illegal immigration into Macau through its Hengqin campus.
Responding to local Chinese newspaper Macau Daily, UM revealed that it also plans to install around 40 more surveillance cameras and an infrared alarm system this week. It also claimed that there are 170 security personnel on the Hengqin campus now, and believes that the amount of security guards is sufficient to maintaining safety. The university and the Macau Customs Service (SA) also have a communication mechanism so that they are able to notify each other upon the discovery of illegal immigrants.
Some UM students have voiced their concerns about the problem of illegal immigrants attempting to sneak into Macau through the campus, which is also a threat to their personal safety.
Up until September this year, SA has already had 24 cases of intercepting illegal immigrants in the campus and has deported 49 people.
Meanwhile, Macau’s deputy to the Chinese National People’s Congress, Lao Ngai Leong, claimed yesterday that the mainland border security force at Hengqin has never weakened. He said that mainland authorities would continue to strengthen their border patrol and increase the number of surveillance systems. He said that the mainland border security department has not suggested to him that they have encountered any difficulties.
Apart from illegal immigration, UM students also complained that there was illegal car racing in the Hengqin campus.
The Office of the Secretary for Security has also replied to Macau Daily and claimed that authorities have already introduced a series of measures to tackle the border security problem on the Hengqin site. The reply explained that there have already been 24-hour patrols by Public Security Police (PSP) officers to monitor the situation inside the campus. A communication mechanism has also been developed between PSP and SA so that the former will launch emergency procedures, including the random inspection of vehicles, when they have received warning from the latter about illegal immigrants.
