An exhibition co-organized by the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) rights organization, Rainbow of Macau, and its Hong Kong counterpart, Pink Alliance of Hong Kong, is currently open to the public at the Ox Warehouse to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Interphobia (IDAHOTI) this coming Sunday.
Titled “Growing Pains,” the five-day exhibition is intended to demonstrate a contrast between the life being part of a sexual minority in childhood, adolescence and early adulthood, and the lives of heterosexual people. The two groups sought to use an artistic platform to expose the Macau population to the discrimination faced by the LGBTI community.
According to Jason Chao, the spokesman for the local LGBTI rights concern group, the exhibits were already on display at the University of Macau and at numerous Hong Kong tertiary educational institutions two weeks ago. Guided tours are also available during some periods.
The IDAHOTI was formed in commemoration of the decision in 1990 to remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organization.
Last year, the group similarly organized an al fresco exhibition for two days, with the aim of drawing public attention to the suffering of the sexual minority. However, due to technical issues, the group opted for an indoor venue this year. Staff reporter
