Woman loses HKD350,000 in online romance investment scam

A local woman fell victim to an online romance scam, losing HKD350,000 after being persuaded to invest in virtual currency by a man she met on social media.
The man, who presented himself as a potential boyfriend, convinced her to open an account on a specified website and purchase virtual coins. Initially, her account showed profits, but when she attempted to withdraw funds, her requests were denied.
The scammer then demanded USD50,000, threatening to distribute her intimate photos, sent during their relationship, to her family and friends.
Refusing to comply, the woman reported the case to the police on July 19. The Judiciary Police are currently investigating the matter.
The victim, described as middle-aged, had been communicating with the man since last October and had shared revealing photos under his persuasion.
Authorities urge the public to exercise caution when engaging in online romances and to verify investment opportunities carefully. Times Reporter
