The Macao Cultural Centre presented Jordi Savall & Hespèrion XXI in a concert played to a sold out Grand Auditorium on Saturday night. The early-music virtuoso was in town for the very first time, and impressed the audience with an exemplary display of technique on the period instruments.
The Catalan musician demonstrated strength both as an interpreter and an ensemble leader, offering the audience a musical journey through ancient traditions around the Mediterranean Sea. The concert presented a humanistic dialogue between peoples and cultures through the interpretation of Christian, Sephardic, Ottoman and Arabo-Andalusian compositions. Vocalists from Greece, Turkey and Israel interpreted a line-up of traditional tunes including “Hermoza muchachica”, “Üsküdar” and “La Moledet Shuvi Roni”.
Distinguished as UNESCO’s “Artist for Peace”, Grammy award winner Jordi Savall is seen as the most important icon of early music worldwide. A conductor and creator of a unique style, Savall has dedicated his life to the rediscovery of forgotten musical treasures for more than 40 years.
