Association calls for restoration of Rua dos Mercadores to boost tourism

Dilapidated and structurally unsound buildings along Rua dos Mercadores and Rua das Estalagens are raising safety concerns and threatening Macau’s image as a tourist city, according to neighborhood associations.

A report by Jornal Cheng Pou cited the associations, saying many older buildings remain vacant due to inheritance disputes.

As a result, these structures have fallen into disrepair, exhibiting severe conditions such as concrete spalling and trees growing through walls.

This deterioration has impacted a key thoroughfare for tourists visiting popular attractions. Notably, when large crowds gather near the Ruins of St. Paul’s, the Public Security Police Force (PSP) implements crowd control measures to redirect foot traffic through this area, further harming Macau’s image as a tourist destination, the report said.

A representative was quoted as stating that although some buildings have been reinforced with iron scaffolding, falling debris could still pose a safety hazard to pedestrians. The dilapidated appearance of these structures may also negatively impact visitors’ perceptions, particularly tourists, regarding Macau’s image as a tourist city.

It is deemed essential to address the safety issues associated with these deteriorating buildings and the problem of peeling exterior walls to reduce risks to pedestrian safety.

The report includes several recommendations for the government, such as establishing a cross-departmental task force to inspect all standalone buildings, “three-nil buildings,” and dilapidated structures along crowd control routes. It suggests initiating repair plans for high-risk cases and encouraging property owners to undertake redevelopment and beautification projects to enhance street aesthetics.

Additionally, infusing Rua dos Mercadores with historical narratives could transform it into a distinctive thoroughfare, linking it with Largo do Senado, Rua dos Ervanarios, and Rua da Felicidade to develop pedestrian routes and enhance the area’s role in attracting and dispersing visitors.
