Chinese New Year visitors below gov’t expectations

Visitor arrivals into Macau increased during the Chinese New Year period compared to 2021, as per data revealed by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

However, the figure falls short of government expectations of up to 20,000 tourist arrivals per day.

According to the MGTO, visitor arrivals exceeded 76,700 during the five-day period from January 31 to February 4 (the 29th day of the prior month to the fourth day of the Lunar New Year), an increase of over 20% compared to the same period of last year’s Chinese New Year Golden Week.

A total of 76,742 visitors arrived in Macau during the five-day period, the vast majority of which were from mainland China, with over 71,000 arrivals.

Of the five days between the 29th day of the prior month and the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, the highest number of visitors came on February 3 (the third day of Lunar New Year), with nearly 22,000 arrivals, of which 20,700 came from the Mainland.

Nearly 33,000 arrivals entered Macau through the Border Gate, followed by Hengqin and the airport, with over 20,000 and 13,000 arrivals respectively. Tsing Mau Port and Taipa Ferry Terminal each had over 3,000 arrivals coming through these two ports.

The latest figures provided by the Public Security Police indicate that almost 19,000 tourists crossed the border to the SAR Saturday, February 5. JW
