The number of vehicles crossing the borders of Macau registered a significant increase in the first five months of this year, a statistic release from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has shown.
Cross-border vehicle traffic from January to May this year has reached 2,686,876 trips, a figure that accounts for a 63.2% hike year-on-year.
At the same time, the gross weight of containerized cargo by land (12,735 tonnes) recorded a drop of 34.3%.
In May alone, the number of cross-border trips reached 614,013 (up 56.2% y-o-y) with a higher increase (58.9%) of light automobile trips (573,611).
Meanwhile, the gross weight of containerized cargo by land in May fell by 40.5% y-o-y to 3,051 tonnes, with the cargo passing through the checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (2,896 tonnes) accounting for about 94.9% of the total.
The same release notes that at the end of May, Macau totaled 249,338 motor vehicles, with the number of light automobiles (114,181) and heavy motorcycles (108,407) rising by 1.0% and 2.0%, respectively.
May was a strong month for the sales of motor vehicles, with the new registrations growing 41.8% y-o-y to 1,032 (325 of the registrations were electric). Accounting for more for this increase was the sale of new light automobiles, which went up 60.4% to 470 (128 of these sales were electric). RM
