DSAL issues MOP7 million in fines for unlawful work over last five quarters

The Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) has reportedly issued fines totaling up to MOP7.13 million in cases involving unlawful work.

A total of 741 joint inspection operations were conducted with the Public Security Police Force throughout 2024 and up to the end of March this year. These inspections resulted in the identification of 738 cases of illegal immigration or work outside the scope of work permits.

According to DSAL, of the 738 cases, 428 involved employers, while the other 310 involved individuals, specifically non-resident workers.

The bureau also noted that in three cases, employing entities were imposed additional penalties for hiring or arranging illegal work for foreign employees, resulting in the revocation of 10 employment permits and a six-month ban on applying for new permits to hire foreign employees.

This data disclosure follows an inquiry from lawmaker Ella Lei on the matter.
On the same topic, the Macao Government Tourism Office noted it continues to inspect tour guides, which Lei said is one of the professions where illegal work cases often occur.
