Gov’t aims to promote patriotism through 80th anniversary war exhibition

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, the SAR government launched a month-long themed exhibition yesterday, with Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai emphasizing the opportunity to promote a national spirit centered on patriotism as the ‘One country, two systems’ policy enters a new stage of development.

The exhibition was unveiled at 10 a.m. yesterday morning at Forum Macao and opened to the public at 3 p.m. It will run until September 24.

In his opening speech, the Chief Executive reflected on Macau’s support during the War of Resistance Against Japan, emphasizing the ongoing exhibition that showcases the close ties between Macau and the Chinese people. He noted that 80 years ago, the Chinese and their global allies displayed extraordinary courage and resolve, enduring fierce battles to secure victory against Japan and fascism.

“Throughout the 14-year conflict, the people of Macau remained closely connected to the motherland, playing an irreplaceable role and making significant contributions, including forming patriotic organizations and supporting the war effort from the outset of the Mukden Incident.”

He emphasized that Macau’s resistance exemplified both patriotism and international humanitarianism.

The photo exhibition was organized to honor historical figures like anti-Japanese pioneer Ye Ting and musicians such as Sinn Sing Hoi, as well as medical staff and young patriots who rushed to the battlefields.

“We will vigorously promote the national spirit centered on patriotism, targeting the broad masses of Macau compatriots, especially the younger generation. We will continue to organize a series of commemorative activities to […] honor the contributions and sacrifices of our forebears, and transform historical memory into spiritual strength for contemporary people,” Sam stated.

“The victory of the War of Resistance marked a pivotal moment for the Chinese nation, transitioning from suffering to rejuvenation, and it continues to inspire us as we pursue national rejuvenation today. In the face of unprecedented challenges, we must draw strength from that spirit, remain committed to our love for our country and Macau.”

The exhibition was also inaugurated by Zheng Xincong, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau Special Administrative Region.

In his speech, he emphasized that young people are the hope and future of Macau, serving as a vital force for both the region and the nation. He encouraged them to carry forward the “red gene,” uphold aspirations for a strong country, bravely embrace the responsibilities of national rejuvenation, and act as builders and successors of the ‘One country, two systems’ framework.

“This exhibition is not only a heartfelt reflection on the tumultuous years of the past but also an expression of our commitment to peace. Let us use history as a mirror, look to the future, and fully implement the ‘One country, two systems’ policy with unwavering determination. We must resolutely safeguard the hard-won peaceful development environment and work together to write a new chapter in the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation in Macau,” Zheng stated.

He urged all sectors of Macau society to inherit and promote the great spirit of the War of Resistance, leverage the institutional advantages of the ‘One country, two systems’ policy, firmly safeguard national security and Macau’s stability, and focus on economic development and planning to continuously open new prospects for the high-quality development of the ‘One country, two systems’ cause.

Working group established to promote patriotism

The Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government has formed a cross-departmental working group under the theme “Honoring History, Remembering the Martyrs, Cherishing Peace, and Striving for a Better Future” to organize activities for the 80th anniversary of the War of Resistance Against Japan.

Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai emphasized that the group’s mission is to help residents understand and embody the spirit of the War of Resistance.

The initiatives aim to draw on local historical resources, promote patriotism, and inspire the younger generation to align with the motherland for personal and national development.
