The Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin has recently unveiled a detailed territorial spatial plan for public consultation, which includes a proposal to add four new border crossings and four corridors to enhance connectivity with Macau.
The draft plan is currently open for public comment until the end of this month, with the aim of establishing an integrated spatial layout for Hengqin and Macao that features a “cross-axis belt and three major zones” as well as a “dual-core, multi-point structure.”
Among the proposals, the draft plan emphasizes enhancing connectivity infrastructure within the cooperation zone by strengthening external transportation development, accelerating the construction of the Guangzhou–Zhuhai (Macau) high-speed rail, and reserving construction corridors. It aims to integrate with the rail transit networks of both Macao and Zhuhai, planning rail links to both cities.
The plan includes the addition of four new land-based corridors to Macau, enhancing existing connections such as the Lotus Bridge and the University of Macau underwater pedestrian tunnel. The planned corridors consist of Shizimen Avenue, Huitong Fifth Road, Lian’ao Road, and Jinjiang Avenue.
Additionally, the plan proposes four new “first-line” checkpoint facilities based on the existing Hengqin Port: a new smart checkpoint at the University of Macau’s Hengqin campus; a checkpoint at the Financial Island Ferry Terminal connecting to Macau’s Inner Harbor Terminal; a checkpoint at Lian’ao Road linking to Taipa’s Dom Pedro Roundabout; and a port at Jinjiang Avenue connecting to the Coloane shooting range area.
The draft also outlines planned rail transit corridors in Zhuhai, along with the establishment of seven bus hub stations, 12 terminal stations, three integrated vehicle depots, two passenger terminals, and a new yacht terminal. The passenger terminals will include the existing Hengqin Passenger Transport Terminal and the Financial Island-Macao Ferry Terminal.
