Kai Fong lawmakers propose strategies for economic recovery, social development

Lawmakers from the Macau General Union of Neighborhood Associations (Kai Fong) emphasized the importance of addressing social and livelihood issues amid the city’s post-pandemic economic recovery and noted that Macau is transitioning and developing its industries to achieve moderate economic diversification.

Lawmakers Ho Ion Sang, Leong Hong Sai and Ngan Iek Hang summarized their work during third session of the 7th Legislative Assembly (AL) in a press conference held yesterday.

During the session, a total of 149 written queries, 15 oral questions and 39 advance agenda items were submitted to the AL.

The lawmakers outlined several key strategies, including promoting the “1+4 Plan” to foster industrial talent and stable employment, optimizing housing policies and public transportation systems and improving elder care services and medical facilities.

The “1+4 Plan,” which was referenced in relation to multiple issues raised at the meeting, focuses on integrating four major industrial talent planning areas to foster talent development and stable employment.

The lawmakers outlined plans to conduct long-term surveys to identify talent needs, provide youth employment assistance, increase support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in adapting to digital transformation and strengthen collaboration with local industries.

Leong advocated for improving accessibility in urban areas and enhancing public transportation systems, calling for smart transportation solutions and better infrastructure planning. This includes light rail systems (LRT), taxis, buses, water management and road construction projects. Additionally, the lawmaker addressed the progress of sea-crossing and district-crossing construction among other critical infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, Ho offered suggestions for improving elder care services and enhancing general medical facilities.

In terms of tourism, lawmakers referred to the “Tourism +” initiative, which aims to create outdoor performance venues to boost cultural events and attract visitors. This initiative includes organizing various performing arts festivals, increasing support for local cultural organizations and “leveraging the Jockey Club land appropriately.”

Ngan reported that Kai Fong handled 1,220 consultations and cases, with 46% related to social security, medical care, and education, while 27% pertained to administrative and legal issues. Nadia Shaw
