Kiang Wu Hospital predicted an up to 9 percent turnover of its staff due to the government’s new recruitment plan for the public healthcare system.
Public hospital and healthcare centers will recruit more than 500 new staff members throughout this year, with over 70 percent of them being medical personnel.
Currently, the privately run Kiang Wu Hospital has some 1,800 staff, including some 320 doctors and a nursing team of nearly 900 members. “Depending on different types of work, the hospital is expected to see a staff turnover from 3 to 9 percent,” said the hospital’s vice superintendent, Chan Tai Ip.
“We hope the government could conduct its recruitment phase by phase instead of all at once, so that we can have time to organize training of medical staff and even hire some experienced medical professionals from neighboring regions,” he added.
Mr Chan also said that although the staff turnover will have a slight effect on Kiang Wu, it will have little impact on its overall medical quality and healthcare environment.
Moreover, the hospital is preparing to add more manpower and equipment to bypass the demand for prenatal screening that has been pressing on the public healthcare system. “The Health Bureau director hopes that we can double our daily quotas of 50 nuchal translucency tests [for Down’s syndrome diagnosis] when needed. Whether it’s in manpower or equipment, we have enough to meet the demand,” added Chan.
