A Macau Daily Times cartoon received an honorable mention at the 23rd Sejong International Cartoon Contest SICACO 2014, held in Seoul, South Korea. The cartoon was drawn by Rodrigo de Matos, who is the author of the section “Times Square” every Friday on MDT.
Rodrigo was awarded in the contest’s free section for a cartoon that shows a construction loader about to devour a traditional pagoda, and which was published in our August 29, 2013 edition. “The cartoon was inspired by a report about the problems of protecting the architectural and historic heritage in Asia,” explains the artist. “It shows the pressures that come with the rapid economic growth in the continent and the fast and almighty construction industry.”
In a competition where 1,374 works were submitted by cartoonists from 60 countries and territories, including Macau and Hong Kong, the Grand Prix was won by Pavel Constantin, from Romania. Rodrigo brought an honorable mention to Macau. “To me, it’s always an honor to represent Macau in these international contests, which I do very often and expect to be doing in the future,” Rodrigo said.
Last year, the cartoonist won the Grand Prix in the Press Cartoon Europe, held in Belgium, for a work he created for Portuguese weekly Expresso. He clinched another accolade with a piece of work that was published in the Times – namely, the third prize in the World Press Freedom International Editorial Cartoon Competition, held in Canada.
