Lawmaker calls for review of radio taxi operations

Lawmaker Ron Lam has submitted a written inquiry demanding the government review and improve the operation of radio taxis. He requested a comprehensive taxi model plan, including feasibility studies, timelines, and public consultations on introducing ride-hailing services. Lam highlighted that taxi dispatch companies pay an annual license fee of MOP6,000 per vehicle, much lower than the eight-year individual taxi permits. Drivers face high rental fees and income challenges, leading to mass resignations. With “blue” and “red” taxi licenses expiring in 2025 and 2028, Lam urges authorities to reassess the taxi service model and protect drivers’ legal earnings.
